“Which platform is better?” is the wrong question. The right question is: which is better for your business?

Shopify and WooCommerce together power the majority of online stores in the world. Both are proven. Both have extensive ecosystems. And both have trade-offs you need to understand before you decide.

A quick introduction

Shopify is a managed SaaS platform. You pay a monthly subscription, and Shopify handles hosting, security, updates, and infrastructure. You get a clean environment with no technical overhead.

WooCommerce is an open-source plugin for WordPress. There is no platform subscription fee, but you or your developer manage hosting, security, and updates.

Cost

Shopify

Plan Monthly price
Basic $29
Shopify $79
Advanced $299

Add transaction fees (0.5-2%, depending on plan, unless you use Shopify Payments), plugin subscriptions, and a theme.

WooCommerce

The platform itself is free. You pay for:

  • hosting ($10-50/month for quality WordPress hosting)
  • a domain (~$15/year)
  • the premium theme and plugins you need

Total cost is often lower, but it requires more management.

When Shopify is cheaper: when you factor in the time your team loses maintaining a WordPress environment.
When WooCommerce is cheaper: for existing WordPress sites or teams with in-house technical knowledge.

Ease of use

Shopify is designed for non-technical users. Setting up the store, adding products, and managing orders are all intuitive out of the box.

WooCommerce gives you more control but requires more technical understanding. Every major update (WordPress, WooCommerce, plugins) is your responsibility. Unmanaged environments accumulate security risk over time.

Flexibility and ownership

WooCommerce wins here without question. Because it is open-source, every part of the code is yours. No platform restrictions, no lock-in on complex integrations, no hidden logic.

Shopify is closed. Some things simply cannot be done, or are only available on higher-tier plans. Headless architecture is possible, but complex and expensive.

For most standard online stores, Shopify’s constraints are not a problem. For complex B2B scenarios, ERP integrations, or unusual business models, WooCommerce is often the better foundation.

Ecosystem and integrations

The Shopify App Store has over 10,000 apps. Most standard integrations exist and work out of the box. Quality varies, but selection is large.

WooCommerce has over 59,000 WordPress plugins, plus an entire ecosystem of WooCommerce-specific extensions. Integrations with regional providers (local payment gateways, shipping carriers) are often better covered here.

SEO

Both platforms are capable of strong SEO, but execution is what counts.

WooCommerce on WordPress with Yoast or Rank Math gives you complete control over every SEO setting. Shopify has improved significantly in recent years, but some advanced settings (canonical URLs, variation handling) are still limited.

Page speed is an SEO factor, and Shopify out of the box often scores better here because it controls the hosting. A well-configured WooCommerce environment can surpass it, but requires investment.

Who should use which?

Shopify is the right choice if:

  • you are starting out and do not want to worry about infrastructure
  • you sell heavily through Instagram, TikTok, or Shopify Markets
  • your team lacks technical knowledge
  • you have standard needs without complex integrations

WooCommerce is the right choice if:

  • you already have a WordPress site and are expanding it
  • you need specific integrations or business logic
  • you sell in a regulated market with local payment requirements
  • you have a developer or agency handling maintenance

Our recommendation

At WebZone we build both regularly. The decision always comes down to:

  • catalogue size and complexity
  • the client’s internal technical capacity
  • required integrations
  • planned growth trajectory

There is no wrong choice. There is only wrong context and wrong execution.
