Your page ranks first on Google. Traffic is dropping anyway. This is not a flaw in your optimization. It is the new reality of search.
Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini increasingly answer the question themselves, at the top of the page, with no click required. The visitor gets the answer and leaves. Your page, the source of that answer, stays unvisited. The discipline that solves this is called GEO.
What Actually Happened to Search
Until recently, search worked simply: you type a question, you get a list of ten links, you click. Businesses fought to rank as high as possible on that list. We call this SEO.
Now Google shows an AI Overview above the results, a composed answer that AI writes from several sources. The user often gets everything they need right there. The same goes for ChatGPT with web search, Perplexity and Gemini, which do not even show a classic list of links but a direct answer instead.
The consequence is measurable. For informational queries where an AI answer appears, sites that have not adapted report 20 to 40 percent less traffic. For queries with an AI Overview, clicks on the top three results are down sharply. More and more searches end without a single click.
If your traffic has fallen over the past year while your rankings stayed the same, this is the most likely reason.
What GEO Is and How It Differs From SEO
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is optimizing your content so that AI search engines cite you as a source in their answers.
The difference is fundamental:
SEO makes sure your page ranks high on the list of links. The goal is a click.
GEO makes sure AI cites you in its answer. The goal is a mention, even when there is no click.
SEO is not dead. Google still builds AI answers from pages it understands well, which means the technical fundamentals still matter. But the win has moved. Before, being in first place was enough. Now you have to be cited inside the answer, or the user never sees you at all.
Why a Mention Without a Click Is Even Worth It
A fair question: if the visitor does not click, what do I get?
Three concrete effects:
Visibility and trust. When AI says “according to company X”, your name is seen by everyone who asked the question. That is exposure to the buyer at the exact moment they are looking for a solution.
Qualified traffic. People who click through to your source after reading the AI answer are more serious. They already got the answer and still want more. That is a better visitor than a random click off a list.
Brand recognition. When AI cites you repeatedly, people remember the name and later look you up directly. That direct traffic is the most valuable traffic you have.
How to Build a Page That AI Cites
There is no secret formula, but there are concrete steps that AI models reward.
Answer the question clearly and immediately
AI models like to cite content from which the answer is easy to extract. That means a clear statement up front, not three paragraphs of intro before the point.
Use questions as headings (H2 and H3) and answer them in the first sentence. If someone asks “how much does an online store cost”, the first sentence under that heading should be a concrete answer, not musing about how every project is different.
Be specific with numbers and facts
AI models prefer to cite content with concrete data over vague claims. “The process takes two weeks to two months” is more citable than “the process is fast”. Original figures, examples and data from your own practice are what competitors do not have.
Build topical authority, not a single page
AI models trust sources that cover a topic in depth. One page about “online stores” is not enough. A series of connected articles covering platforms, costs, speed, security and maintenance is what the system recognizes as a credible source on that subject.
Make sure AI understands who you are
Use structured data (Schema.org), clearly state your company, authors and contact information, and make sure your details (name, address, activity) are identical everywhere across the web. AI models build a picture of “entities”, and consistency is what makes you recognizable.
Do not neglect the technical fundamentals
AI search engines cannot cite a page they cannot read. The page must be fast, accessible to bots and free of obstacles. This is the same foundation that powers classic SEO, which is why Core Web Vitals matter here too. More and more sites are also adding an llms.txt file that tells AI models what is on the page and how to understand it.
Be present beyond your own site
AI does not read only your site. It reads reviews, mentions, directories, forums and articles where you appear. Consistent data and presence on credible places influence whether the model treats you as a serious source.
What You Should Actually Measure Now
The old metric, “how many clicks from Google”, tells you less and less. Alongside it, track:
- Direct traffic and branded search. Growth means people are remembering you, often straight from AI answers.
- Whether AI actually cites you. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google questions from your industry and see whether you appear. This is the new version of checking your rankings.
- Traffic quality, not just quantity. Less traffic that converts better into inquiries beats more traffic with no effect.
What GEO Is Not
GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is an extension. Technical fundamentals and good content are a prerequisite for both.
GEO is not a trick. There are no keywords to secretly stuff. AI models reward clear, credible and useful content, which is really what search was always supposed to be.
GEO is not a one-off task. AI search engines change from month to month. This is a process, not a project with an end date.
What This Means for Your Business
If your customers decide based on what they read online, the rules of the game just changed. Being found is no longer enough. You have to be cited.
Businesses that understand this now are building an advantage that will be hard to catch up on in a year. Those who wait will watch traffic slowly disappear even though “everything looks fine on Google”.
